Ascites in Cats .. Cause,Signs and Treatment

Ascites in Cats

Definition: The accumulation of fluids inside the peritoneal cavity of the animal which lead to Abdominal distention.

Cause:

  • Abdominal Neoplasia: The most common Cause of Ascites
  • Hypo albuminemia: Due to chronic hepatic disease
  • Congestive Heart failure
  • Hemorrhage

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Impending respiration
  • Diaphragmatic excursions

Diagnosis:

  • Thoracic Auscultation: murmur or gallop sounds
  • Abdominal Palpation
  • Complete blood count
  • Radiography
  • Bile Acid

Treatment:

  • Must be treat the primary disease which cause Ascites
  • Abdominocentesis
  • Furosemide: Used when the Ascites is secondary to Congestive Heart Failure
  • 0.50 mg/kg
