Aspirin Toxicity in Cats

Definition: A Poisoning Occurs when the cat treated with over dose of Aspirin.

Cause:

- The Cat has a slow rate of drug metabolism due to deficiency of some enzymes which required for drug conjugation and excretion,The Aspirin is under the Category of drugs which have delayed elimination So the disease occurs.

What is the safe dose of Aspirin in Cats?

- 20 mg/kg

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Anorexia
  • Vomiting
  • Hyperthermia
  • Tachypnea

Diagnosis:

  • Take the history of the Case (The case administrated with over dose of Aspirin)
  • Complete blood Count: Show Anemia
  • Serum Salicylate Levels

Treatment:

  • If Early Case,Use emesis
  • Protectants due to intestinal ulceration
  • Fluid and Electrolyte therapy (Supportive Care)
  • Acid-Base Management
